Though Miller's Crossing has been one of my favorite films since its release in 1990, I have to confess that it has also always troubled me a bit. Gabriel Byrne's Tom Reagan embodies a seamless mixture of smart, cool, and even "ethical," but he navigates the film's complex plot largely by manipulating three homosexual characters, ultimately leading each to a violent death. It bothers me that the production of this quintessential noir character--who closes the film by leaning, Bogart-like, against a tree, his steely blue eyes peering out from under his slightly tipped hat, directly into the camera--hinges upon and is motivated by the identities and relationships of three gay men, their characterization as "unethical," and their erasure from the violent male social order that makes up the world of the film. The explanation that this is simply the way violent men of that social set operated in that time and place, that the gangland space simply is violent, racist, misogynist, and homophobic, has never set terribly well with me. It either sells the Coen brothers short, dismissing them as merely representative, or lets them off the hook for an uncritical reproduction, even glorification, of violent and homophobic social structures without a collateral interrogation thereof. Portraying Tom as the epitome of male coolness, setting him against that tree with hat safely restored, all debts paid, all messy relationships vanquished, the film's final image seems to fantasize a social stability after and through the eradication of the "unethical" homosexual element.
